Edgar Martins. ‘Ruins of the Second Gilded Age’

Posted in Uncategorized by humanendeavour photography on August 1, 2010

When I was at the Photographers Gallery last week I notice some of Edgar Martins work in the print sales room. ‘Ruins of the Second Gilded Age’. This work is interesting as it has an obvious link with our Degeneration project but also because Martin’s had to answer criticism about the retouching done on the photographs. The piece was shot for the the New York Times as a documentary piece, which was fine until it came to light that Martins had altered some of the images through retouching them afterwards. This didnt go down well with the New York Times and raised the debate once again of what can be classed as documentary within photography.
